Hitch Hiking to Oregon.

My room mate, Doug, having information that only he and Roni possessed, made the decision to get married.

We recently had been re-assigned to Edwards Air force Base located smack dab in the middle of the great Mojave desert of southern California.

We were all of 18 years old and life-changing decisions came easy.

Getting to Oregon to perform the deed however...was a bit more difficult.

Doug wrangled a 10 day leave of absence but myself, the honored BEST Man, could only get a short 3 day pass.

No Problem, huh? We could hitch-hike to Oregon. Lets see now...24 hours to get there, 24 hours to do the deed and a whole 24 hours for me to get back.

Off we went north, through the desert, the Sacramento valley, up past Shasta and eventually into Oregon and the loving arms of loved ones at home sweet home.

I was so sleep deprived at the wedding as to have little memory of the event. If it hadn't been filmed I would remember none of it.

Just a little sleep that night and off I went, south this time with 24 hours to get back to base without being AWOL.

I made it as far as Bakersfield with time running out, managed to catch a greyhound bus on down into the Mojave desert....A bit late but never the less, finished with the ordeal.

I still can remember being alone in the mountains of northern California, cold and frightened in the dark, waiting for kindness of strangers to help get me back to my other home.

That was 50 years ago, yesterday and they are still happily married.

Only an insane person would attempt such a thing today. Perhaps being 18 IS a form of insanity.

The Evil Beagle

She never was an ordinary dog. From the get-go she personified an aura of evil incarnate.

I recall the drive home from central Washington state with the 5 week old puppy in a basket directly behind the drivers seat. The ungodly howling and banshee baying from that small animal were indeed unsettling to say the least.

She had been placed in the basket to keep her safe, snuggled protectivly between two small girl children who had just christened her with the name of "Polly".

The noisy drama continued until we decided to stop for awhile to let her out and clear our heads of the intense screaming eminating from the now exausted canine with the Polly-wally-doodle-all-the -day identity.

This was the begining of life with the evil beagle.

Three years later....

Polly is as much a part of our family as...eh...ahem!.......I am.

Although she is still very evil..(and coniving)...she is sweet, fun loving and hungry nearly all the time.

She has become quite ROUND lately but this atribute is her excuse to sleep 80% of the time.....working up energy for her next meal.

We still love ya, Polly Pooper.

Princess Pomelia

Princess Pomelia lived in a far away land of sunshine and greenery.
She was a happy princess who loved horses even more than the warm comforts of her life.
Her Highness, the Princess, lived a very long time ago and only one faded photo exists today......proof of her unequaled beauty.

No one knows her whole story but new evidence has surfaced indicating she lived a long and adventurous life.
Watch this site for more information as it is discovered.

51 years ago, today.

51 years ago, today.

I remember my parents and girl friend seeing me off at the Greyhound Bus Terminal.

The bus-ride to Portland, all young men, nervous and excited.

The physical and orientation talk by uniformed men...another bus-ride to the Airport...Flying on an airplane for the first time..another bus-ride that took forever... to....Parks Air Force Base, not far from the San Francisco Bay area and then it began.

Suddenly I became an adult for the first time. A real Grown-Up, reaping the consequences of my choices in life.

That was 51 years ago today.

Now I am a Grandfather, many times over, semi-retired and sitting here in awe of times passage.

I couldnt have had a better life even if I HAD planned it. Very few regrets .

I wonder whats next.
